Armenians in Albania and Armenian–Albanian connections

Abstract

This article examines the historical and cultural relations between Armenians and Albanians from their earliest recorded contacts to the twenty-first century, with particular attention to the formation, development, and transformation of the Ar-menian community in Albania. The study traces early connections through medie-val and Ottoman contexts and explores the growing mutual awareness of the two peoples in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It focuses on the settle-ment of Armenian refugees and migrants in Albania, particularly after the Armeni-an Genocide, and their contribution to commerce, industry, medicine, culture, and public life. Despite their small number, Armenians established a respected and eco-nomically active community in several Albanian cities. The article also examines the impact of the communist regime, which brought confiscation, political persecution, cultural isolation, and restrictions on religious and communal life. Following the collapse of communism, the community experienced a period of national revival, although emigration and assimilation continued to threaten its survival. Biograph-ical sketches of prominent Albanian Armenians illustrate the community’s contributions in medicine, music, cinema, literature, politics, and other fields. The article concludes that the Armenian community of Albania represents a distinctive yet little-studied component of the Armenian diaspora and a significant chapter in the history of Armenian–Albanian relations.
