Journal History

Background

The history of Balkanistic Worlds is rooted in the long-standing academic cooperation surrounding Balkan and regional studies in Bulgaria.

Until 2025, academic activities connected with the journal were developed through cooperation between South-West University “Neofit Rilski” and Balkanistic Forum – International University Seminar for Studies and Specializations, an independent non-governmental organization established in 1999.

This cooperation brought together academic researchers and specialists working in the fields of Balkan studies, history, culture, society, languages, and related disciplines and contributed to the development of an international scholarly network.

The Establishment of Balkanistic Worlds

Following the end of the institutional cooperation between South-West University “Neofit Rilski” and Balkanistic Forum, the journal entered a new stage of its development.

From 2025 onward, Balkanistic Worlds has been published by Balkanistic Worlds Publishing House, which is owned by Balkanistic Forum – International University Seminar for Studies and Specializations.

The publishing house was established in 2023 and is registered in the National Register of Publishing Houses in Bulgaria under publishing code 978-619-92694.

Since 2025, Balkanistic Worlds has been the principal journal publication of the publishing house.

The Current Journal

The present journal operates as an international, peer-reviewed scholarly publication with its own editorial and publishing arrangements.

The journal is published three times annually and follows a double-blind peer-review procedure. It welcomes scholarly contributions in English, Bulgarian, German, French, and Slavic languages.

Its geographical and thematic scope encompasses Southeast Europe and the Balkans, while also extending to the Black Sea region and the Caucasus and to comparative research addressing connections between these areas and wider European and global contexts.
